What is Thila Homam?

In Sanskrit, sesame seeds are called Thilam. Any Homam (fire ritual) performed using sesame seeds is known as Thila Homam. It is a sacred Vedic ritual done to satisfy and bring peace to our departed ancestors (Pitrus).

Rameswaram is one of the Moksha Traya Kshetras (three sacred places leading to salvation).
Therefore, performing Thila Homam in Rameswaram helps remove Pitru Dosha completely and grants Moksha (liberation) to the ancestors.

Note:
Rameswaram is mentioned in Skanda Purana as a place with divine energy due to the presence of Lord Shiva’s sanctum (Sri Ramanatha Swamy Temple) and Lord Sethumadhava  the confluence of two seas, and the sacred “Rama Setu” bridge — making it one of the most powerful Moksha Traya Kshetras.

As Rameswaram itself is a Moksha Traya Kshetra, Thila Homam can be performed on any day. However, performing it on specific days brings special benefits according to the scriptures:
