श्री गुरुभ्यो: गतिः
नास्ति सेतुसमं तीर्थं नास्ति सेतु समं तप: नास्ति सेतु समं पुण्यं नास्ति सेतु समा गतिः
What is Thila Homam?
In Sanskrit, sesame seeds are called Thilam. Any Homam (fire ritual) performed using sesame seeds is known as Thila Homam. It is a sacred Vedic ritual done to satisfy and bring peace to our departed ancestors (Pitrus).
When does Pitru Dosha (Ancestral Curse) occur?
Pitru Dosha arises due to various reasons connected to ancestral obligations being unfulfilled. Common causes include:
- When one fails to perform the necessary duties or rituals for parents while they are alive.
- When the proper last rites (Antyeshti Karma) are not performed after their death.
- When yearly Shraddha(Tithi) (ancestral rites) and rituals are not performed regularly after their demise.
- When unnatural or untimely deaths occur in the family — such as suicide, drowning, electrocution, fire accidents, poisoning, vehicle accidents, hanging, or death by lightning.
- When someone dies at a very young age or without completing their destined lifespan.
- When a woman experiences miscarriage or the child dies in the womb.
- Guru curse, Brahmachari curse, Thampathi curse, Brahmana curse, Kanniya curse, Sumangali curse, Sanyasi curse, Cow curse, and Pakshi (bird) curse are considered as forms of Pithru Shaapam (ancestral curses).
What are the effects or symptoms of Pitru Dosha?
If Pitru Dosha exists, it can cause various obstacles and hardships in life, such as:
- Delay or obstacles in marriage.
- Frequent misunderstandings or separation in relationships.
- Childlessness or infertility.
- Birth of physically or mentally challenged children.
- Recurrence of unnatural deaths (including suicide) within the family.
- Miscarriages and stillbirths.
- Chronic diseases or unexplained health problems.
- Financial losses and loss of property or stability.
- Problems affecting up to twelve generations of the family.
How to remove or cure Pitru Dosha?
According to Vamana Purana, Narada and Yama Dharma Raja advised that performing Thila Homam during the Moksha Traya Kshetra (the three star constellations connected with salvation) removes Pitru Dosha and grants peace to ancestors.
Thus, scriptures declare that performing Thila Homam during Moksha Traya Nakshatra brings relief from Pitru Dosha and ensures prosperity for descendants.
Why should Thila Homam be performed in Rameswaram?
Rameswaram is one of the Moksha Traya Kshetras (three sacred places leading to salvation).
Therefore, performing Thila Homam in Rameswaram helps remove Pitru Dosha completely and grants Moksha (liberation) to the ancestors.
Note:
Rameswaram is mentioned in Skanda Purana as a place with divine energy due to the presence of Lord Shiva’s sanctum (Sri Ramanatha Swamy Temple) and Lord Sethumadhava the confluence of two seas, and the sacred “Rama Setu” bridge — making it one of the most powerful Moksha Traya Kshetras.
